- Purpose – Determine the resistance of leather grain cracking and the grain crack index, according to ISO 3378. It is applicable to all heavy leathers.

- The device consists of a plate fixed with a clamp to hold the sample to be tested, a roller and a handle that can be rotated 90 degrees. There is also a set of eight shafts with different diameters, according to table 1 of the standard. The position of the roller is adjusted according to the mandrel.
- The test specimen is fixed on the clamp so that the grain side of the leather faces the roller. The larger shaft is placed onto the shaft, then the roller position is adjusted to touch the skin. The lever rotates 90 degrees at a constant speed.
- After the first test, the grain of the leather is examined and if no cracks are observed the test should be repeated with the next small shaft. This sequence is performed until some cracks are visible.
- All parts of the machine that come into contact with the test sample are made from stainless steel or aluminum and are sturdy enough to avoid bending during testing.
